What do I Want to be When I Grow Up?

So as we all know according to the circle of life we go to school -> we study -> we give exams -> repeat the same thing for a few years -> go to college -> study and give exams -> get a job -> retire. It’s a very peculiar way of life in my opinion. If you think about it, we spend maybe more than half of our life just studying and giving exams from which I don’t remember much after I give the exam so I pretty much waste half my life.

A school is a place of such mixed emotions. You spend all your developing years there. You grow, you break but you meet some really cool people there too! You experience a lot of first times, you go through a lot of stress, you hang out with your favourite people. It’s a whole world in its self. Personally, I don’t mind school, it isn’t too bad. Sometimes you get lucky and end up with a great friend group and if you work hard enough you get good grades too. There are so many people who don’t get so lucky and don’t end up with good friends. This whole concept of school in a way baffles me because you spend around 12-14 years there just to give it all up in the end.

There comes a time in life when you have completed your time in school and everything you have ever known, you have to leave behind and move on. You leave behind your school life and you do this thing called growing up. You go to college and start building a future for yourself. It’s really scary if you think about it (more the saying goodbye to your friends and leaving your comfort zone than building a future for yourself). It’s not all bad, I heard college life is pretty decent too. It’s kind of like school but the grown-up version, you experience a lot of firsts and you make some great friends too except you kind of have to take care of yourself.

Well, I think the scariest part of this whole experience we call life is, yes you guessed it, deciding who you want to be when you grow up. As a person and a job for yourself. There are so many possibilities out there it's kind of insane! Choosing is the hard part. Some people already know when they are young and some people spend half of their life trying to decide what they want to be. Personally, if you ask me what I want to be when I grow up- I have no idea (well maybe a little) but this is for me to explore and find out, but the whole point is for me to go in search. If I already knew then I wouldn’t allow myself to grow. I would keep myself fixated on that particular thing which in a way is good because I’m working towards my future but on the other hand I’m not allowing myself to explore and discover other fields

I might never know what I truly want to be, I might spend my whole life trying to figuring out where I fit into this world and what exactly is my contribution. The thing is- I can be anything I want to be. The problem is that there are so many choices that making a decision is almost impossible

There are so many people who spend their entire life figuring out who they want to be both as a person and as a job. Then there’s the who you are crisis. It’s absolutely normal, we all go through it at some point in life. I mean we all are kind of confused about who we really are. Here let me help you understand this via a metaphor- imagine that life is a competition, and one of the players is you. On winning this competition your prize is you get to find out who you are! We have the mid-life and quarter-life crisis but eventually, everything ends up okay.

Growing up is so scary. You have to start being independent and you have to pay taxes and bills and so all kinds of different things. School will become this distant memory that you look back at and either rejoice or despise. All the times you thought that this was so important will become the most insignificant of things and all the people you thought would be with you forever have no idea who you are anymore. You leave a piece of yourself behind. So all the advice I can offer you is that enjoy while you have the time and try different opportunities, it might contribute to helping you know what you want to be when you grow up.

I still have some time to figure out what I want to be but time holds my answer and it's running away with it, chasing it is the hard part. Hopefully one day, I will eventually figure out what I want to be?
