How to Save a Half-Wasted Study Day

Is it almost evening and you have not done anything? Have you been procrastinating the same chapter for ages? Are you not able to retain any information? Well, if you want to get back on track and salvage whatever time you have left, here are some tips for that-

1. Stop procrastinating right after you read this blog:

- I know you are sitting here and trying to avoid studying, so, right after you finish reading this blog, go and start your work and try to save whatever time you have left

- It is so easy to procrastinate and say that you have no motivation, trust me, I get it. (Been there, done that, got the t-shirt). Sometimes studying is not about motivation, it is about discipline. You have to be disciplined enough to start your work at an appropriate time

- I would suggest setting a start time and cut off time for yourself every day. Since half the day is gone already, you have to work with what you got

2. Write down a list of what you have to do and break it up into parts:

Part A- The Important tasks- these include the tasks that have deadlines or have to be completed now so you do not loose progress. Doing the important things even if that means doing only a few tasks is still efficient. Knowing you have finished what is important will hopefully help you be motivated for the next day

Part B- The less tedious tasks- the ones that take you a shorter time and will make you feel more accomplished. Let’s say that it is a casual study day where you have no deadlines, just studying to add to your progress, finishing all the short tasks will make you feel more accomplished. Let’s be real- everyone has their off days and it is completely okay to have those kind of days

(You probably don’t have time for long tasks that are not as important, so avoid those if you can)

Part C- What you want to accomplish- Looking at the above tasks, write down the ones you would like to accomplish and if you want to take it one step further, you can go ahead and time block everything. Setting an end time with something to treat yourself to after, as a reward is the best thing you can do. No matter how many tasks you did, you still salvaged what was left of your day and that’s what matters

3. Tell yourself that it is okay!

- Don’t be so hard yourself for wasting half your day, if you did not feel like doing anything it is fine

- We are all so busy, obsessed with productivity and getting things done that we don’t stop to live in the present and take in what’s going on around us. Call that friend you have been meaning to or finish that small bit of work that you kept procrastinating. Small wins are what matters after all!

- Here are some quotes that may help:

“It’s okay to still be figuring things out right now.”

“You are going to end up where you are supposed to be.”

“You are doing your best. You are making progress. You will reach your goals.”

“Be happy with what you have, while working for what you want.” – Hellen Keller

“You are not responsible for the things that you cannot control.”

4. Clean up around you:

- Prepare yourself for having a productive evening, clear up the mess

- Take all your books out

- Take all the additional stuff that you need and head on to the place where you generally study

5. Remove all distractions:

- This is one of the most important steps

- Leave your phone in the other room, if you need it then I recommend using the do not disturb option

- Ask people not to come into your room while you are studying so you can avoid losing your flow of thought

- Take a snack to avoid wasting time in making it, as you will probably end up wasting time

- Scan your surroundings and remove any object which you may think will distract you

6. Take breaks:

- you may not have much of the day left, but it is important to take breaks in between tasks otherwise you will only put in half the amount of effort you could have put in

- I would suggest that since you have less time, you should limit your breaks or make them shorter

- do not forget the importance of taking breaks but make sure not to get carried away, avoid going on your phone. Maybe just talk to a family member or set a timer and read that book that you have been wanting to!

7. Reflect on this experience and learn from it:

- Try re-tracing your steps and see where you got distracted and how, so in the future you can avoid that particular activity when you have a study heavy day

- Use different techniques and see what works best for you if you ever come across the situation where you have to salvage half the day

- Try to find things which you can add to your day so you can be more productive

- Try planning your schedule the night before so you avoid wasting time in the day deciding what tasks to complete

- I would suggest you and your friend decide to keep each other accountable so you both can finish more work

- Most importantly remember that it is okay to have off days. Salvaging a half-wasted day is most important when you have tasks that have deadlines or work that is really important
