We all have some habits which we know are not good for us but we never took out the time to get rid of them. We all are determined to break certain habits but just don’t know-how. Here is your sign to change up your life and get rid of all the bad habits you have been meaning to break
What causes bad habits?
Research says that the main cause of bad habits is stress and boredom. You develop these habits as a way of coping with both stress and boredom. In a way, it is a response to your body. You can also learn to cope with these positively
Some examples)
- Stress eating
- Nail-biting
- Too much junk food
- Avoiding eye contact
- Not getting enough sleep
These are some of the most common bad habits which people have
Here are some tips to help you get rid of bad habits:
1. Identify the source of the habit: everything has a source, it all starts somewhere. If you identify what is the thing that triggered you then you can work forward from there. It can also help to prevent their habits that may develop due to that one trigger
2. Ask someone to help you: you don’t have to make this transition alone, you can always ask someone to keep you accountable and to motivate you. Maybe they have the same habit as you so you both can try to change your life together. It’s always nice to have someone to keep you accountable. You can develop different methods which work for you
3. Find the motivation behind wanting to break the habit: there is always a reason for you wanting to break the habit. Use that reason and amplify it which will get you through the whole process. Breaking a habit is really not that easy, it will take time and a lot of effort but it is not impossible
4. Start from the bottom: work your way to the top. Start from the beginning, go back to the root cause, and then take it slowly from there. If you work your way to the top I can guarantee that if you have the patience and put in the effort you can get rid of your habits
5. Change your environment: change of environment is always good. Sometimes you can be doing the same work in the same place repeatedly and it gets very repetitive which is never good for you at all. Sometimes doing the same work you were doing at home in a different place is all you need, maybe that will help you get rid of your habit. Change of environment can change your mindset. You start looking at things from new and different angles
6. Be patient: It will not happen overnight. It will take some time for you to be able to break your habit. Patience is very important because if you don’t wait you will get very frustrated which will not help your case. Sometimes all you got to do is wait
7. Replace your bad habit with a good habit: this is scientifically proven to be the fact that works the best. Replacing your bad habit with a good habit can prove to be very useful actually. You have included that habit into your routine so why not just include a different one, a better one?
8. Change your mindset: this is one of the biggest things because you yourself need to believe that you can do it. Mindset is everything in this situation because it starts with you. If you know that you can do it, then you will push yourself and work towards it. It depends on the power of your mind.
9. Check in with yourself: it is of utmost importance that you practice self-care. You cannot achieve much if you are not in a mental state. If you physically take care of yourself, it will benefit you. Do not be afraid to take a break once in a while. Watch whatever you feel like. Treat yourself. Remember, “Self-love isn’t selfish.”
10. Always have a plan-B: before you start trying to break your habit, plan out several possibilities because if one doesn’t work you might get disheartened and give up thinking it will never happen. You need to keep trying, eventually, you will figure out something that works for you. Trust me, wait for some time. Time heals everything
