Today’s blog is a little different because Tania Nanda and I are collaborating on a topic we both find to be a huge thing and has affected many people and some people don’t realize how serious it is (btw: go follow her blog- taniasterriblethoughts, her content is top-notch)
This topic is kind of in the form of a story, a comparison, as a person who is going through burnout vs a person who is recovering from burnout with pointers on the side guiding you through your burnout
Sometimes you just kind of need a break from everything you have going on, our workload has increased tremendously, and catching a break is hard and it also means your chances of burnout are super high. Burnout can be from anything like- creating content, studying, social interactions, your job, or anything that you put a lot of effort into
Do any of these apply to you?
· Constant headaches
· Stomachaches
· Always exhausted
· Can’t seem to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning
· Doing that one thing feels like a burden
· You hate your job
· Your work is piling up but you are not motivated to complete it
· You have a mental block
Well, we are pleased to inform you that you have been diagnosed with a mild case of
Some of the major causes to help you understand your burnout better:
1. You may be doing too much of that one thing
2. No inspiration
3. You bit off more than you could chew
4. It became too monotonous
5. You were working under too much pressure
6. You are not able to balance your work life and social life
7. You have too much work to complete
I bet you have a ton of questions like “But guys what if it’s just stress?”
- The answer to that- is that you will just know, stress is something that makes you do a certain thing because you feel a lot of pressure but burnout is when you don’t want to do something. The difference is that in most cases stress makes you finish your work and burnout is when you treat your work as a burden
“What is burnout in the first place?”.
- The answer to that- Burnout is a state of emotional physical and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress and it is difficult to get out of it. Did you know there have been people who have had to quit their jobs because they're so burned out, yes, it is serious. You need to identify your stage of burnout before it becomes too serious
To help you understand burnout better here is a day in the life of someone who is experiencing burn out-
Today I woke up feeling as tired, yesterday’s work hanging over my head, a burden that I need to deal with. I couldn’t get out of bed but I finally dragged myself out of bed ready to deal with the mountain of work I had piling up on my desk. I woke up 5 minutes before my classes started. Sat on my chair and stared into the laptop for 5 hours at a stretch, not really bothering to give much of my attention. I had a major headache and constant cramps. I felt emotionally and physically I lay my head down on my desk and shut my dry eyes to give them a break. I got out of the chair and went to sleep, ignoring all of the responsibilities I had. I took a warm shower after I woke up but it didn’t help me. I tried to work out but I got dizzy. I completed as much of my work as my tired brain would let me so at least I was productive and I made the most out of this day.
Over here it is obvious that said person is burnt out and everything feels like a burden, completing the work is a huge chore. This person is not motivated to get out of bed. This person has a mental block. School is something that drained all their mental energy.
Here is the day in the life of someone recovering from burnout
Today I decided to bunk my classes and give my mental health more importance. I let my body wake me up and didn’t use an alarm to wake up. I went and took a shower and played some music. I decided to start looking after myself more because there’s no point in doing work unless I don’t give myself a break. I went back to sleep because I felt like it. I woke up feeling refreshed. I wore my mask (always wear a mask when you go out) and walked in the sun for a while, refreshed my mind. I didn’t let any of the work I had, get to me because that was for when I felt good enough to do it. I watched a feel-good movie and I went to sleep, feeling satisfied with the break I gave myself. No dry eyes, no headaches, I didn’t feel exhausted. I’m happy.
Here are some ways to recover from your burnout
1. Most important point- take a break
2. Look at your task with a new angle
3. Find out the cause for your burnout
4. Try fixing your problem
5. Maybe try talking to someone about the issues you are facing
6. Try setting goals, to complete your tasks. It gives you a sense of productivity
7. Take care of yourself, take a mental health day
But we do want you to know that you cannot possibly recover from burnout in a day. You need to find that balance in your life. You need to give your studies/work importance but give yourself equal importance. When you feel tired you need to learn to shut down your laptop and do something for yourself. Talk a walk or paint or draw, anything that makes you happy.
I wish you the best of luck
