Disclaimer - As always this is my personal opinion. Don’t take it seriously, it is just what I feel personally.
Today, I want to compare the famous books to the movies that were adapted from them. Most of the time the book always reins superior but there are always exceptions. We love seeing the characters we all know and love become a live version of the book.
1. Fault in our stars
Book: I think the writing of this book was absolutely magnificent. There are many lines that are still quoted today by the readers. John Greens' writing is absolutely brilliant. He can really bring a book to life. here are some of my favorite lines from this book- "Oh, I wouldn't mind, Hazel Grace. It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you." " You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world...but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices." “The thing about pain is, it demands to be felt.” One criticism I have about the book is, I feel like the characters did not get justice. Augustus’ death was very abrupt and not well put but otherwise, I loved the book, it will forever be one of my favourites.
Movie: The movie… was not my favourite. I do like the actors but I don’t think the movie did justice to the book. There were many lines that did not feel the same when delivered in the movie. The movie could have done better and they could have recreated the scenes slightly better than what we got. I felt like it was mediocre
I definitely prefer the book to the movie
2. Divergent
Book: the books were definitely well written. The first book just blew me away, they were so interesting and kept me captivated for most of it. As the series progressed, the second book and third were not the best written. It kind of got me to stop reading for a while. Veronica Roth could have definitely taken some more time to write the books to perfect it. However, the idea itself was pretty fantastic and the first book was definitely worth the read.
Movie: the first movie was pretty interesting. It did not do justice to the book but the acting was pretty decent. The next few movies were… although they were not doing well, I feel like the franchise deserved an ending for people to know what actually happened to the characters. The movie could have done so much better
Overall, I prefer the books to the movies
3. Harry potter
Books: the books were pretty nice but I did not like the way the beginnings of the books were written, they drove me away from continuing the book in a way but the rest of the book was definitely worth the read. I just find it slightly overwhelming that there are so many characters that I could not keep track of them. However, one could only marvel at J.K. Rowling’s writing, it is truly fantastic. Harry Potter is very iconic as it is
Movies: the movies were absolutely brilliant, granted some scenes were cut out and some things were changed but they were so well-acted and so well made. It also becomes easier to keep track of the characters and the story when you see it in the movie and it is always nice to put faces on the characters so if you ever decide to re-read the series you can picture their faces. I love the movies so much, I can always re-watch them and never get bored
I loved the books, but I do prefer the movies over the books
4. Five feet apart
Book: the book was so heartbreaking but very well written. I've read it quite a few times by now. I loved the writing style and the entire storyline. I thought the writing was absolutely beautiful. It’s one of the saddest books I have ever read
Movie: the movie was quite long and slow. I found it hard to get through the entire movie. The book just felt more fast-paced compared to the movie. Although, I do love actors. The movie could have definitely done a better job in embodying the book.
I do prefer the book over the movie
5. Hunger Games
Book: these books were some of the most captivating books I have ever read. Once I picked up the book, I could not stop reading it. The story was so interesting and the books were so well written. It was hard for me to put the book down. I did not quite enjoy the last book of the series but otherwise, I thought all of the books were quite amazing. One of my favourite book series to this date
Movies: I liked the movies to a certain extent. I did get a little bored in the middle but the movies were quite well directed and did not disappoint. However, if we are to compare the movie to the books- the books were far better than the movie. The movie on its own is pretty well made. It was nice to see the real versions of the characters we were only left to imagine
Since this choice is based on the comparison of the two- I like the books better
6. Percy Jackson
Books: I don’t think anything can ever compare to books. They were so well written and the concept was so unique. Rick Riordan found a way of intertwining Greek mythology and our present. They were so interesting and well thought out. It’s a perfect mix of the past and the present
Movies: granted there are only two movies but…. I was quite disappointed. I did not enjoy any of the movies. The casting was slightly off. It was a good attempt nonetheless. It is quite hard to match up to the books themselves, so I do understand
I definitely prefer the books to the movies
Some movies that I've seen that were based on books
⁃ Alice in wonderland- 9/10 (author: Lewis Carroll)
⁃ Sisterhood of traveling pants- 7/10 (author: Ann Brashares)
⁃ The devil wears Prada- 8/10 (author: Lauren Weisberger)
⁃ To all the boys I’ve loved before- 7.5/10 (author: Jenny Han)
Some books I've read that were made into movies
- Paper towns- 4/5 (author: John Green)
-Kite runner- 4.5/5 (author: Khaled Hosseini)
So I hope you enjoyed reading this blog. I hope to read more books that were adapted into movies so I can make a part 2
Thank you for reading,
Xx Mahika
